The plan of study presented to Malatesta and the principles inspiring it are those that humanist scholars were still defending against the intransigent opposition of religious men. ’’ First, he lists the authors most likely to impart good lessons in grammar, rhetoric, and style, and advises on delivery and good handwriting. In Aristotle’s vision of ‘‘semen as tool’’ [I: 22 (730b 20)] the male seed is seen as shaping and animating an otherwise inchoate mass of female materiality, supplying it with life, form, definition, and reason.
