The parent has copies of the same list at home and has marked information on that day's copy. The interviewer's task is to find out which of those behaviors, if any, occurred during that day and, ifany did, in what setting. Notice that this method treats a whole day as an interval. While this may be a crude datum for most scientific purposes, it can be quite adequate for clinical purposes, and it isfar better than merely asking the parent to recall events when the parent is in the clinic once a week.

The data collection should be treated as systematically and professionally as any other part of the clinician's services. - - - - - - - - - - Making the Data-Collecting Task Realistic in Difficulty If one is considering ABC recording, it is important to recognize that it is intense. It is not realistic to ask most parents to do such recording for every instance of a behavior that typically occurs, say, eight or more times a day. Instead, a sample can be obtained. For example, a parent could be asked how realistic it would be for them to record the first four instances each day.

Another issue to consider is activity level. If a teacher were recording a withdrawn child's playing with peers, would it be sufficient that the child is merely within certain distance of the peers and watching them? Or must there be some kind of two-way interaction? If the latter, what constitutes "two-way"? Figures 5 and 6 present an example of a mother's recording of the duration of her 2-year-old' s wearing glasses, and a summary graph. This child was visually and hearing impaired and refused to wear both his glasses and his hearing aids, resulting in his receiving very poor sensory input from the environment.
