Baldwin had been married to Richildis, the sister of Adam lord of Bethsan. 30 Though no one could have imagined it at the time, Aimery was later to become king of Jerusalem (1197-1205) and first king of Cyprus. According to the Lignages d'Outremer, Baldwin then separated from Richildis and married Elizabeth (or Isabella), the daughter of John Gotman and widow of Hugh, lord of Caesarea.

It is, to use his words that have been quoted already, 'highly romanticised', with many details that would seem belong more properly in a chanson de geste. The chronology is defective: Sibylla's marriage to William predated Philip of Flanders's visit to the East and the battle of Montgisard, and there are other minor errors: for example, Baldwin married the lord of Caesarea's widow, not his daughter. But, setting aside such mistakes and making allowance for later embellishments designed to enhance the history's appeal, the questions still remain: had Baldwin been expecting to marry Sibylla at the time of her marriage to Guy in 1180?
