1 Most statisticians usually do not make the distinction between nominal and ordinal variables and simply refer to them as categorical. The reasons that these distinctions exist is that there are techniques that make use of ordinal information. In addition, there are some comparisons that make more sense with ordinal data. For example, we are likely to be interested in the differences between groups of observations in the high category versus groups of observations in the low category, whereas there would be fewer reasons why a particular comparison between different colors of cars would be sensible.

In general, the α-quantile qα is the value that 100×α% of the data are less than. My students have typically found this definition very confusing. However, if we return to the median and the percentiles, then we can relate the definition to something we are familiar with. If one of our children takes a test and scores in the 90th percentile, then most of us instinctively know that this is good. It means that approximately 90% of the students who sat the test had a score that was equal or lower to our child’s score.

3 show the counts of the observations falling into each of the race code and genotype categories. 3. Both tables use rule 6 by having captions that explain (briefly) what they show. Captions should not be used to write essays. If you need to give a long explanation of a table, then put it in the text of your document, not in the caption. The numbers in each cell are quite disparate, and hence, we already have evidence that the genotype frequencies will be quite different. However, this also makes it quite hard to see what the total sample size is in each group.
