Her brother Bill was a tap dancer starting out in show business, and he suggested that she enter an amateur contest being held at Philadelphia’s Pearl Theater. She won first prize, and later won an amateur night contest at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. That’s when she knew she should pursue a career in entertainment. She started singing and dancing regularly in Philadelphia’s black nightclubs in the 1930s. In 1941, during World War II, she toured with the USO, entertaining the troops.
