It campaigned during the 1954 East Pakistan provincial elections in a united front alliance with the Krishak Praja Party (KPP) following the dismissal of the United Front government. Fazlul Haq split the Awami League. One sector took up a 6-Point Programme calling for the establishment of full provincial autonomy for East Pakistan in light of the Lahore Resolution of 1940. Under this plan the center would be left only with responsibility for foreign affairs and national defense. An Awami League government, led by Atwar Rahman Khan, was established in Dhaka in August 1956.

Following Suhrawardy’s death in 1963, Mujib-Ur Rahman became the AL’s leading figure. The party secured a massive victory in the 1970 East Pakistan polls, securing 160 of the 162 National Assembly seats, thus also polarizing emphatically the differences between East and West Pakistan. The failure to evolve working relations between the two wings of Pakistan led to growing tension and to the emergence of Bangladesh under the AL’s leadership. Since Sheikh Mujib-Ur’s assassination in August 1975, the AL has been one of the two major parties in Bangladesh [the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) being the other] that have alternated in office.
