Yellow celluloid handles will sometimes exhibit a “white liner”; that is, at the edge of the handle where it meets the liner there will be a distinct layer of white. As many knife collectors are aware, this older celluloid material has a tendency to rapidly decompose if stored improperly and many knives will be found with the handles either “crazed” with cracks or partially or completely disintegrated, even on a knife that does not exhibit much use or abuse.
