These would form what we call a two-dimensional lattice (in the parlance of science fiction, this has been called flatland). But the mile streets also form a lattice whose unit cell is a square mile area, which is called a section. Thus, a section contains 64 blocks and 640 acres. From high altitude, one cannot discern the blocks, and the streets look like the lattice. The lattice of the mile streets can then be thought of as a superlattice. If we now put in expressways every 10 miles, then a second superlattice can be created in which the unit cell is 100 square miles in area.

We know now that these devices suffered from source and drain contact resistances that were far too high. These series resistances dramatically lower the gain. Nevertheless, some two decades later, the cutoff frequency for high electron mobility transistors has only been raised by about a factor of 5 through strong industrial efforts. This has been achieved by moving to strained InAs for the active channel in the transistor, a material we discussed in the last chapter. But this line of research is now gone, as it has become irrelevant for university work.
